Marilyn F. Minrath earned her Masters and Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her pre-doctoral training as a Resident in Clinical Psychology in the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry and the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Minrath is also a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing and began her professional development with a Master of Science Degree in Psychiatric Nursing. She held a joint appointment as an assistant professor at Yale School of Nursing and the Connecticut Mental Health Center in New Haven, Connecticut for six years before returning to graduate school to study Clinical Psychology.
In 1990 she opened her clinical practice in Charlottesville. In her practice she has integrated her two primary areas of training and specialization; psychotherapy and forensic evaluations.
Dr. Minrath is a psychoanalytically trained therapist whose work in individual and couples therapy follows a traditional psychodynamic model. At the heart of this approach is the development of self-awareness—recognizing both your vulnerabilities and the inner resources you can draw on to navigate life’s challenges. Grounded in contemporary psychoanalytic theory and attachment research, this approach examines how recurring themes from past experiences and relationships continue to shape present-day emotions and choices. By gaining insight into patterns of behavior in relationships and life decisions that no longer serve you, meaningful and lasting change can occur. The aim is not only relief from symptoms, but also the development of a deeper, more integrated sense of self and an enhanced overall sense of well-being.
As a forensic psychologist, she conducts comprehensive court ordered psychological evaluations. Her primary focus is conducting parenting capacity psychological evaluations for courts and departments of social services.
From 1995 to 2020 she worked with Dr. Andy Thomson in a forensic psychology practice conducting psychological evaluations in criminal and civil cases. These cases included evaluations for Capital/Death Penalty Sentencing, Mental Status at the Time of the Offense, Competency to Stand Trial, Personal Injury and Damages, Wrongful Death and Fitness for Duty.
She has qualified as an expert witness in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts and Circuit Courts throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. She has also been qualified as an expert witness in the federal court system.
She is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Virginia. She is also a certified Forensic Evaluator.
